$1 Felony Case Stirs Mix Reactions from Netizens

$1 Felony charge against Mark Abaire for not paying a $1 soda at McDonald's stirs various reactions from the micro-blogging site Twitter.

Last Thursday, 52-year-old Abaire pour a soda in a courtesy cup (being used only for water), went to sit outside without paying at the cashier.

The local manager approached him and asked him to pay $1 but he refused. His alibi: a courtesy cup was given to him by a staff after he asked for water. But since water is not available, he opted for the beverage that will cost him less money: the $1 soda.

After being cursed by Abaire, the manager called the sheriff nearby, who arrested the 52-year-old and charged him with $1 felony, instead of just petty theft.

The incident hit the headlines and now netizens posted different reactions regarding the matter.

Here are some of them:

@GearyAgent99 (Jackson Geary)
"A man faces a felony charge and is still imprisoned after not paying for a $1 cup of soda from McDonald’s….wow."

@ebrown08 (Mr. GRIND)
"How you get a felony held on $6,500 for allegedly stealing $1 cup of soda from McDonald’s?? WHAT???"

@SighWTF (Kat)
"Once again, stupid headline. This is why no one trusts the media anymore. He was a stupid criminal."

@OccupyUmd (Occupy UMD)
"Good work officer! Fill the jails with more dangerous $1 coke stealers like this guy! http://t.co/WUpp9hEY Really?"

@MichaelMcClead (Michael McClead)
"@McDonalds I’ll pay 4 this guys soda if you drop your charges against him 4 his unfathomable crime of stealing a $1 pop"

You may think the felony case being charged to Abaire is too much, right? This is because Abaire had a couple of petty theft convictions already in the past and hitting the “three strikes” law in Florida aggravates the crime.

In the defense of some people's claim that what McDonald's did to Abaire was uncalled for and unjust, the owner of McDonald’s in East Naples issued the following statement:

“I take these matters seriously. As a local business owner, I have a responsibility to take appropriate steps to protect my business and keep my customers and employees safe.”

Furthermore, the owner also pointed out that Abaire was issued a trespass warning at the same McDonald’s in 2008.
