Dolphy Needs Our Prayers

Dolphy, the country's Comedy King, is "not in the pink of health" - this is according to his long-time partner Zsa Zsa Padilla during the thanksgiving press con for ABS-CBN's primetime series "Budoy" Tuesday afternoon.

“Siguro kahit paano you'd been hearing rumors, the past years have been very difficult with my family. Alam naman nila na si Dolphy, aside from being 83-years-old, he's not in the pink of health," the Divine Diva said.

"And a lot of times ay naging very considerate ‘di lang ang mga co-stars ko kung hindi pati ang mga director at staff namin. So, naramdaman ko ang alaga at pag-aalaga,” she added.

Padilla said Dolphy is hanging in there and that the showbiz icon is in good spirit after he came out from the hospital.

Despite her admission that her partner has been in and out of the hospital lately, Padilla did not reveal what Dolphy's illness is.

“I don’t think I’m in the position to discuss that right now... maybe in another time if the whole family is ready. Kasi I don’t want to be the only one to be saying things regarding his health,” she said.

Padilla would also like to ask Dolphy's fans to pray that God will give him physical strength so he can continue to entertain a lot of people.

Christopher Lao Delighted to be Informed that He Passed the Bar Exams

Christopher Lao became a household name last year for the wrong reasons: he let his car float on flood waters and got featured on a primetime newscast saying the infamous line “I wasn’t informed of the flood.”

The incident made his name Christopher Lao and the term “floating car” trending topics on Twitter.

Yesterday, February 29, Christopher Lao was delighted to be informed that he is among the 5,990 who passed the bar exams.

In an interview by Yahoo! Philippines, Lao said that the incident almost made him decide to quit his plans of becoming a lawyer. This is because he was ridiculed in various blogs and social networking sites for that 24 Oras interview (CLICK HERE FOR RELATED ARTICLE) making the phrase “I wasn’t informed” a viral punch line.

“I went through a lot during those times. I almost quit review and planned to forego the bar because I got so depressed,” he said.
And because of that experience, Christopher Lao wants to pursue an advocacy preventing cyber bullying now that he’s a certified lawyer.
“I want to have cybercrime laws, and prevent cyber bullying. As a lawyer, this time I would like to see good bills are legislated,” he said.

In fairness to Lao, his “embarrassing” experience wasn’t that bad at all because he bagged an endorsement deal from BPI because of it (READ RELATED ARTICLE HERE).

Bar Exams Topnotcher Raoul Atadero Shares His Secret

Bar exams 2012 topnotcher is Raoul Angelo Atadero from from Ateneo de Manila University.

The bar exam results for batch November 2011 have been released by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, February 29, and leading the pack with a score of 85.5363 is 27-year-old Atenista Raoul Angelo Atadero.

Atadero, who also valedictorian of Ateneo Law Class of 2011, wasn't expecting to top the bar exams.

“It gave me goose bumps. I wasn’t exactly expecting to top the bar. I really didn’t think I would do that well. My Mom was beside me and she was the one crying,” he said via an interview by the media.

Bar Exam Topnotchers:

1. Raoul Angelo Atadero, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) - 85.5363%
2. Luz Bolong, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) - 85.5363%
3. Cherry Liz Rafal-Roble, Arellano University - 84.4550%
4. Rosemil Banaga, Notre Dame, Cotabato - 84.1226%

9. Elaine Lacerda, Far Eastern University (FEU) - 84.0401%
10. Rodolfo Aquino, San Beda College (SBC) - 83.7276%

In an interview by Inquirer, Atadero shared that his "secret" in topping the bar was "hard work, prayer and luck."

"Most important is hard work. You really need to work hard because no amount of prayer or luck will make you pass the bar,” he quipped.

He also said that from April to the grueling month of November when he and 5,989 others who took the bar exam at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, he was glued to law books for up to 14 hours daily.

“I started studying mid-April all the way up to November. I get up at 7 a.m., start studying at 8 a.m. and continue until 9 p.m., including breaks for meals. It’s really pretty standard for bar takers,” he said.

When asked what will be his next move after topping the bar exam, Atedero said he wants to become a corporate lawyer.

And he doesn't need to apply because offers from big companies will start to pour in the coming days, just like what happened to previous bar exam topnotchers!

Corazon Aquino Remembered During EDSA 26th Anniversary

A wreath-laying ceremony for the late president Corazon Aquino was led by her son, President Noynoy Aquino during the 26th anniversary celebration of the EDSA People Power Revolution.

Cory Aquino’s monument is located at Padre Burgos St. corner Bonifacio Drive at Rizal Park beside her husband’s monument, the late senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.

Here is the transcript of President Noynoy's speech on Saturday, February 25, 2012:

Talumpati
ng
Kagalang-galang Benigno S. Aquino III

Vice President Jojo Binay; Mayor Alfredo Lim; members of the Cabinet present: Secretaries Volts Gazmin, Rene Almendras, Sonny Coloma; Senator Nene Pimentel; Commissioner Cesar Sarino of the EDSA People Power Commission; Archbishop Chito Tagle; Bishop Gabby Reyes; Representatives Asilo, Trisha Bonoan-David; Mayor Junjun Binay; General Manager Jose Angel Honrado; Vice Admiral Alexander Pama; local government officials; fellow workers in government; honored guests; mga minamahal ko pong kababayan:

Marvin Reglos - Law Student from San Beda Killed in Hazing

Marvin Reglos, a San Beda law student, died from injuries sustained in an alleged hazing incident.

The 25-year-old Reglos was identified on Tuesday morning, February 21, by his relatives. He was brought by two men on board a red Hondy City with plate number WMF 174 last February 19, Sunday night, at the Unciano Medical Center. He was declared dead on arrival.

Two fraternity members Erick Edrosolano Castillo, 28; and Bodjie Amorin Yap, 24, were arrested after they went back to the hospital, supposedly to check on Marvin’s condition.

Marvin sustained severe bruises on several parts of his body. He supposedly sustained these bruises during his initiation rites in the unidentified fraternity.

The victim’s remains were later transferred to Antipolo Memorial Homes, where he was identified by his relatives. His father and mother have yet to arrive from Isabela and Korea, respectively.

Lorvie Reglos, Marvin’s sister, said her brother told her during their last conversation on February 18 that he was joining a fraternity.

Lorvie said a classmate of Marvin has agreed to testify on the incident. Authorities have filed murder and hazing charges against the two.

Police said the case is strong against the suspects after they found from their cellphones several text messages, supposedly from other fraternity members, warning not to speak out on the matter or reveal the identities of those behind the alleged hazing.

Jade Lopez is Not Envious of Cristine Reyes

Jade Lopez is best known as a finalist on the first season of GMA-7's reality based artista search "StarStruck."

Her StarStruck stint became a way for the 24-year-old model/actress to bag minor roles in various TV programs of the Kapuso Network like "Majika," "Princess Charming," "Kaputol ng Isang Awit," "Ako si Kim Samsoon," and "All My Life."

In 2010, Jade continued her career on TV5 bagging minor roles in such programs like "Midnight DJ" and "Untold Stories Mula sa Face to Face."

Since her StarStruck days in 2003, Jade's career did not really take off compared to her batchmate, Cristine Reyes, who already had her own teleseryes and starred in various movies.

In an interview by Yahoo Philippines, Jade reiterated that she's not envious of Cristine.

“Naiinggit? Hindi! Kasi may kanya-kanya tayong time. Kung para sa iyo, para sa iyo. Kung hindi, hindi. Pero I’m not a quitter. Hindi ako madaling sumuko and I’m here again. I’m willing to take the risk and I’m hoping for the best talaga,” she said.

Jade is taking another bid at stardom as she dissed her sweet image and posed sexy on the cover of FHM Philippines.

She's also being managed now by Viva Entertainment with high hopes of taking the showbiz splash this time around.

Ash Wednesday Marks the Beginning of Lent

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of lent among Roman Catholics which occurs 46 days before Easter.

The Catholic tradition was based from the canonical gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, where Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, during which he endured temptation by Satan. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of this 40-day liturgical period of prayer and fasting.

Today, February 22, Catholics are being called to repent for the sins that they have committed and promise they would become better Christians in observance of Ash Wednesday.

As a symbolic gesture, ashes in cross signs are placed on the foreheads of the devout Catholic as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. The ashes used are typically gathered after the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned.

Richard Gutierrez Hosts 'Pito sa Pilipino' this March on GMA-7

Richard Gutierrez meets his idol and fellow environment advocate--Romi Garduce--in a special television event to be presented by GMA News and Public Affairs.

Richard Gutierrez joins Romi Garduce, the first Filipino to climb the seven highest mountains in each of the seven continents of the world, in a documentary special titled "Pito sa Pilipino."

Aside from their initials (RG), Richard and Romi have more things in common: they participate in environmental work on and off camera, and both are outdoorsmen who love to explore nature. According to a press release by the Kapuso network, the special “Pito Para sa Pilipino” will feature Richard Gutierrez and Romi Garduce in a mountaineering adventure where the younger RG gains valuable insight from the seasoned climber.

“Pito Para sa Pilipino” tells us the stories behind Romi’s Seven Summits quest. Using seven select mementos from his seven successful summits, Romi reveals little known details about his journeys as a mountaineer. And as they exchange stories, Richard finds out about an “omen” in Romi’s dream days before his Antarctica expedition. Richard also discovers what life could be like at icy mountain camps, including some of Romi’s strange “souvenirs” from Antarctica. At the close of their adventure, Romi finally reveals what is perhaps the most meaningful memento from his decade-long quest to create a world record for the Filipino.

Don’t miss this rare television moment. The GMA News and Public Affairs special “Pito Para sa Pilipino” airs on Sunday, March 4 at 9 p.m.

Manny Pacquiao is Planning to Retire from Boxing

Manny Pacquiao, 8 division world champion, mulls retirement from boxing to become "Bible ambassador."

Our Pambansang Kamao, who in addition to being a boxing champ is also a congressman and TV personality, may be hanging up his gloves after his upcoming fight with Timothy Bradley Jr. on June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

According to a report by ABS-CBNNews.com, Pacquiao was approached by the Roman Catholic Church about serving as a "Bible ambassador" in order to encourage Catholics to spend more time reading the Scriptures. Since it might not look good for a "Bible ambassador" to beat on people in the ring, he mulls on accepting the challenge and quit boxing.

Pedro Calungsod is Set to Become 2nd Filipino Saint

Pedro Calungsod is set to be canonized as second Filipino saint by Pope Benedict XVI on October 21, 2012.

According to the Vatican Information Service, Calungsod (1654 – April 2, 1672), who got beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2000, was a “Filipino lay catechist and martyr.”

He was a 17-year old Roman Catholic Filipino migrant, sacristan and missionary catechist from Cebu, who along with Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom on Guam for their missionary work in 1672. Through Calungsod and San Vitores' missionary efforts, many native Chamorros converted to Roman Catholicism.

Last Saturday, February 18, Pope Benedict XVI officially announced at Saint Peter's Basilica during a mass that Calungsod will be canonised on October 21 together with 6 others.

Last October, the Filipino martyr passed the third and final stage towards sainthood after the Vatican verified a second miracle attributed to him—the healing of a businesswoman from the Visayas who fell into a coma in 2003.

After his canonization, Calungsod will become the second Filipino saint 24 years after the beatification of Lorenzo Ruiz, a missionary martyred in Japan in 1637.

Calungsod was killed at the age of 18 while doing his missionary work on April 2, 1627, a day before Palm Sunday that year.

'Patrol ng Pilipino' Explores World of Cockfighting

Cockfighting is popular among the rich and the poor because it is not only a hobby and an enjoyable game of luck, but is also an alternative means to earn money.

Tomorrow (Feb 21) in “Patrol ng Pilipino,” Chiara Zambrano explores the realm of cockfighting – from the production of winning breeds, to the frenzied fights in large arenas and small ‘tupadas,’ and the animal rights groups that condemn the sport for its shed of blood.

Get to know the roles of the ‘kristo,’ ‘sintensyador,’ and ‘sultador’ and get a glimpse of what happens before a fight straight from an insider, Juancho Aguirre, one of the pioneers of cockfighting in the country.

Aside from that, Jing Castaneda will also report the latest updates on the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Corona and the showdown among the prosecution, defense, and even the senator-judges.

Meanwhile, Chiara and fellow ABS-CBN reporter Ryan Chua revealed to almost 100 mass communication students their experiences in news reporting and making documentaries in the first leg of the “Patrol ng Pilipino DOCUniversity Tour” at La Consolacion College-Manila last Saturday (Feb 18).

Ryan’s documentary “Behind the Scenes of the CJ Corona Impeachment Trial” gave students an inside look into how reporters gather their stories and deliver the news on TV. According to Ryan, the impeachment trial is expected to run for a few more months and the biggest challenge for them who cover it is to sustain the interest of viewers.

Chiara, on the other hand, imparted that “Patrol ng Pilipino” fulfilled her longtime dream to go to Spratlys and produce a story on the disputed islands. Her award-winning “Kanino ang Spratlys?” documentary, which tackled the dispute of countries asserting their claims on the Spratly Islands, won the Best Documentary Program award for “Patrol ng Pilipino” at the 2012 UPLB Gandingan Awards.

“It’s an elusive story. It’s not everyday that anybody can get there and there’s still a possibility that the islands will not be ours. It was a thrill and an honor for me,” said Chiara.

Know the stories behind the news tomorrow (Feb 21) in “Patrol ng Pilipino” after “Bandila on ABS-CBN, or watch it earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable channel 26), 9:15 PM.

Renato Corona Releases Statement on P-Noy's Speech in La Consolacion

Renato Corona has released an open letter in response to President Noynoy Aquino's speech in La Consolacion:

Bernadette Sembrano Fights for the Mentally Ill in 'Krusada'

People with mental disorders or illnesses are often subjects of mockery and are unjustly incarcerated or abandoned by the judgmental public that labels them ‘lunatics’ or ‘crazy.’

Tomorrow (Feb 16) in “Krusada,” Bernadette Sembrano will examine how the government attends to the needs of the mentally ill and if it provides adequate support and attention to mental health care facilities in the country.

“We often forget that there are people with mental illnesses who need sufficient medical attention. We should re-evaluate if medicine and hospital confinement are their only options for their cure,” she said.

Bernadette has been actively engaged in missions that benefit the mentally ill for her involvement with ABS-CBN Foundation’s Sagip Kapamilya. They rescued the woman who figured in the news for living in a mosquito net in Guinobatan, Albay and the Reodava siblings in Aklan who have since gotten well.

Due to her experience with Sagip Kapamilya, Bernadette has also fought for the improvement of the conditions of mental facilities in the country. There may be existing psychiatric units and day-treatment centers, but most of them are located in Metro Manila and cannot be accessed by patients in rural areas.

Listen, take part and be one with Bernadette’s crusade because it takes more than words to make a stand. Watch “Krusada,” which is nominated in the Social Issues/Current Events category at the prestigious 2012 New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards, tomorrow (Feb 16) after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN, or earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable Channel 26), 9:15 PM.

Oldest Living Thing - Neptune Grass Trumps Tasmanian Plant

The oldest living thing in our planet is no longer the 43,000 year-old Tasmanian plant. The oldest living thing, scientists say, are in the family of seaweeds and seagrass.

Australian scientists have discovered that the oldest living thing or oldest living organism in the planet is the giant patches of seagrass found in the Mediterranean sea which is believed to be 200,000-year-old.

In a report by the Huffington Post, scientists was able to determine the age of the oldest living thing by a process called "DNA sequencing," or ascertaining 40 different sites over a 2,000 mile range from Cyprus to Spain.

Scientifically named Posidonia oceanica or commonly known as Mediterranean tapeweed or Neptune Grass, the patches of seagrass was between 12,000 and 200,000 years old and was most likely to be at least 100,000 years old beating the current holder of the title "oldest living thing," which is the Tasmanian plant.

Posidonia oceanica is a seagrass species that is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea. It forms large underwater meadows that are an important part of the ecosystem. The fruit is free floating and known in Italy as 'the olive of the sea'. Balls of fibrous material from its foliage, known as egagropili, wash up to nearby shorelines. It may be one of the largest and oldest clonal colonies on Earth

Gloria Arroyo Intends to Attend Iggy's Wake

Gloria Arroyo made a request to the Pasay City court on Saturday, February 4, that she would be allowed to attend the wake of her late brother-in-law Negros Occidental Representative Ignacio “Iggy” Arroyo.

The former President and now Congresswoman is currently in hospital arrest pending trial on a charge of electoral sabotage by the COMELEC.

According to Inquirer, the COMELEC demanded that the request should be made specific.

This is because there were reports that Grace Ibuna, Iggy's live-in partner, plans to cremate his remains in London in contrast to legal wife Aleli Arroyo's plan to bring home his remains.

Until there's no clear venue for Iggy's wake as pointed by the COMELEC, the request of Gloria Arroyo to visit his remains is deemed premature.

Valerie Concepcion is Being Courted Again by His Ex-BF Dondon Hontiveros

Valerie Concepcion revealed that she was being courted once again by her ex-boyfriend, PBA player Dondon Hontiveros.

Valerie and Dondon have been together for more than 3 years before the former decided to take a break from him late last year and live a single life. She'd known him since she was 18 years old.

In an interview by PUSH.ph, Valerie Concepcion revealed that the PBA player is trying to win her back.

"...Actually in the two months na naghiwalay kami he was really parang like pinupuntahan niya ako tapos sinusundan niya ako kung nasaan ako."

"Kaya ngayon nag-agree ako into dating him again because he’s really very persistent talaga. Siguro a week niya akong hinayaan and then after that sobra na niya akong kinulit and parang sinasabi ko sa kanya, ‘Alam mo huwag na nga muna tayo mag-usap, sa Feb na tayo mag-usap,’ parang ganun."

"Pero ang tanong niya if I really did need the space. We’re okay now so I guess it was just a phase,” said the 24-year-old actress.

Valerie also revealed that she wants to date other people that's why she broke up with Hontiveros.

“Actually what I wanted sana was to date other people also but he doesn’t want to.

I actually want to open my doors to other guys, but sa ngayon wala pang dumarating eh so I’ll just cross the bridge when I get there if may maglakas ng loob," she said.

Valerie is one of the stars of ABS-CBN's latest teleserye "E-Boy" topbilled by newest Kapamilya child wonder Bugoy Cariño.

Maxene Magalona Denies Issue that She's Planning to Release a Recording Album

Maxene Magalona became a trending topic on Twitter last Sunday because she got off-tune while singing "Pare Ko" with her brother Hero on Party Pilipinas.

In an interview by Joey de Leon in Startalk TX on Saturday, Feb. 4, Maxene admitted that among the Magalona siblings, she's the only one who can't "sing."

Aware that she's not the singer in the family, Maxene cleared the issue that she's NOT planning to release a recording album, hence the Party Pilipinas incident last Sunday.

"Well, alam kong pagtatawanan niya ako at the same time ang sasabihin lang niya is, you know, ang nakuha ko talaga sa daddy ko is, no matter what happens, the show must go on..."
