Azkals Aim to Win First Football Medal for PHL at the 2011 SEA Games
The Azkals or the Philippine National Football Team has a task of bringing home the first ever medal for the Philippines from the Southeast Asian Games.
With their newfound fame, the Azkals are expected to do well in this year's SEA Games--the 26th edition of the biennial meet--specially that the Philippines hasn't won a single medal in football.
The Philippines’ best finish in SEA Games' football event was in 1991 here in Manila. The national team was fourth overall.
But things are about to change this year because the Azkals are aiming to surpass their 4th finish last 1991 and finally bag the first evel SEA Games medal for the country.
However, this task is not going to be a walk in the park for the Azkals because the famous James and Phil Younghusband, Chieffy Caligdong and Aly Borromeo won’t be on the squad playing in Indonesia.
But the Azkals' team manager Dan Palami believes the task is "doable."
The Philippine Azkals are competing against Myanmar, Timor-Leste, Laos, Vietnam and Brunei in the first round. The favorites for the medals are in the other group - host country Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and defending champion Malaysia. Cambodia is the fifth team.
The Top two teams from each groups will advance to the crossover Final Four after a single round robin.
The Philippines faces Vietnam, probably its toughest competition in the group, for its first match tomorrow (Thursday).
