Compostela Valley Landslide Killed 25, 100 More Missing

Compostela Valley landslide claimed 25 lives while 100 more residents are feared to have been buried alive.

25 persons were killed and 100 more missing in a landslide at a mining site in the province of Compostela Valley earlier today (Thursday) which took place at around 3:45 a.m.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the landslide occurred at the mining site in Purok Diat Uno, Barangay Napnapan, Pantukan town due to continuous rain these last few days.

Pantukan town hosts several mining operations for gold, silver and copper.

Police Senior Inspector Werenfredo Reidor said in an earlier interview that more than 100 people were possibly buried in the landslide.

"Bandang 4 a.m., may nagreport na may nangyaring landslide... Initially may report sa amin na may narecover na 6 na sa Diat Uno, then may sampu sa Diat Dos. Ang pagkasabi may higit 100 posibleng natabunan sa pagguho," he said.

The local government of Compostela Valley has ordered a forced evacuation for residents living in similar high-risk areas in the province to prevent more casualties.

It may be recalled that April last year, 13 persons were killed while 100 were displaced because of a massive landslide which happened in the same town in Compostela Valley.
