Filipino Singing Sensation Charice Pempengco on CNN's Talk Asia

Charice Pempengco is no ordinary teenager. Dubbed by Oprah Winfrey as “ the most talented girl in the world,” her voice has stunned audiences around the world and has taken her from talent shows in the Philippines to appearing on the Oprah Winfrey Show in the United States to having a part on the hit TV show, ‘Glee.’ In 2010 Charice also became the first Asian singer in history to rank in the Top 10 of the “Billboard 200” albums chart in 2010. This week Talk Asia sits down with the rising star to talk about her meteoric rise to success.

Below are the excerpts from the interview.

ON HER HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

ANNA COREN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: You came from humble beginnings, growing up in the Philippines. Tell me what that was like?

CHARICE PEMPENGCO, SINGER: Well it was really a tough life, not really easy. My mom’s a single mom and she used to be my vocal coach and I really admire her. She’s definitely my inspiration and I look up to her a lot. I mean I decided to be a singer because of her. It was a tough life before but now this whole thing that happened to me really helped me a lot.

COREN: Your father left when you were 3 years old. What are your memories of that time and how did it affect your family?

PEMPENGCO: I told my mom to stop working because it was really hard. By the age of six I was cooking rice and some stuff for my little brother. I was giving him the milk and everything…Every time I did all the singing contests and it was horrible. You start from 10pm in the night and you finish at 7am in the morning and I had to go to school. She used to cry and she told me to stop and I said “no” because that was the only way we could get a lot of money from it. I really sacrificed everything but at the same time it felt great and it was worth it. Seeing my mom’s face every time I won made me feel great…

ON HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER LATE FATHER
[filmed several weeks before her father’s death]

COREN: Do you miss [your father]?

PEMPENGCO: I actually don’t know. I don’t know. Maybe sometimes when I see some kids with their families. Sorry I keep crying. Maybe when I ask them sometimes, how does it feel to have a dad? (crying) And you know they tell me these great answers and sometimes I wish my dad is here. Maybe I do, sometimes. But at the same time, I don’t because of what happened. It’s hard. It’s really hard.

ON HER RISE TO FAME

ANNA COREN: Four years ago, you were a young singer in the Philippines whose performances were posted on YouTube, now you are this international star who has someone like Oprah as a mentor. Do you sometimes just wake up and think “wow this is my life”?

PEMPENGCO: Yes. Yes I still get overwhelmed. It happened so fast but at the same time, I worked hard for it and I’m still working hard for it.

COREN: How has this fame and this exclusive club that you have entered, how has this changed your life?

PEMPENGCO: For me, I’m still me. But of course my life has changed a lot. From the hard life, from a really tough life and now I actually gave stuff that I really wanted to give to my mom.

COREN: I have to ask you, there was a reported rivalry between you and [actress] Lea Michelle and that you had signed on to do five episodes [of ‘Glee’] but in actual fact you only appeared in three. Is this rivalry true?

PEMPENGCO: When I was there, she was nice to me so I don’t think there’s a rivalry but maybe people think that because I play her rival on Glee so there’s always going to be like that. So people will ask me if it’s like that in real life - I’m like no!

Highlights of Charice Pempengco’s interview with ‘Talk Asia’ will be available online at www.cnn.com/talkasia.

Janelle Manahan Strengthens Case Against Ram's Siblings

Janelle Manahan is no longer writing on paper what she wants to say because she can now speak.

Janelle, together with her lawyers, are now preparing the affidavit on the Ram Revilla murder case. This was a day after being discharged from the hospital.

In an interview by ABS-CBN News and Public Affairs, Manahan's lawyer Atty. Luke Espiritu said his client is ready to refute the allegations of Ramona Bautista, Ram's sister one of the suspected masterminds for the crime.

“Limitado lamang ang ating gagawin na statement kay Janelle doon sa pag-refute sa mga alegasyon ni Ramona Bautista tungkol doon sa pangyayari,” Espiritu said.

Ramona claims she was in Ram's bedroom hiding during the crime but Janelle testifies that they were together when the attack was taking place.

Another point that strengthens the case against Ram's brother RJ and sister Ramona was the confirmation of Janelle that there was indeed a sibling rivalry between them and Ram. Ramona claims they had no conflicts whatsoever.

“There is animosity among the siblings, which could explain the motive behind the crime,” said Espiritu.

Manahan is set to submit her application for the Witness Protection Program this Thursday. She is also request the cancellation of Ramona's passport in order for the latter to face the case and return to the country.

Abner Mercado Advocates for Preservation of Endangered Filipino Films

The country stands to lose thousands of its locally-produced films for the next generation of Filipinos to appreciate unless an institution will be created to ensure its preservation.

In his documentary for “Krusada” tomorrow (Dec 1), ABS-CBN broadcast journalist Abner Mercado reports that only 3,500 out of the 8,000 Filipino films made since 1919 have been preserved, some of which are in bad condition.

“Filipinos today can see the richness of our country’s culture and values by watching classic and contemporary Filipino films. So it is important to preserve these films for the future generations of Filipinos,” he said.

Abner is pushing for the creation of a National Film Archive that will be responsible in preserving Filipino films.

He also talks to some of the country’s biggest names in showbusiness such as the Queen of Philippine cinema Susan Roces, critically-acclaimed director Celso Ad Castillo, box-office hit director Cathy Garcia-Molina, and former child star Niño Muhlach on their thoughts about the issue.

Because it takes more than words to make a stand, watch and be one with Abner’s cause tomorrow (Dec 1) in “Krusada” after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN, or catch it earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable ch. 26), 9:15 PM.

Survivor Philippines - Jackie Forster and Angelicopter Quit the Game

Survivor Philippines Celebrity Doubles Showdown Update: The team up of former actress Jackie Forster and radio DJ Angelicopter have decided to voluntarily exit the ongoing Survivor Philippines Celebrity Doubles Showdown on GMA-7.

Jackie and Angelicopter pleaded to the viewers and the show's production staff and crew to respect their decision to quit the show.

"Choice na namin 'yon, to exit from the game. Sana respetuhin ng mga nanonood, ng production, ng staff. We don't mean to offend anyone," the said.

Jackie pointed out that the people pushing them to be bad are the main reason why they decided to leave the show.

"It represents everything that I've been fighting for the past few years. I want them to see that I'm a godly person. I'm not a bad person they think I am. But if you're playing against people who push you to be a bad person, it makes me feel ugly. I don't want to show that to people. I don't want to be pushed in a place where I have to do that just to win," she explained.

Survivor Philippines Celebrity Doubles Showdown airs weeknights after Munting Heredera on GMA-7.

Piolo Pascual Chooses Not to Defend Himself from KC's Controversial Interview

Piolo Pascual opted not to defend himself by not commenting on KC Concepcion's controversial interview on "The Buzz" last Sunday where the mega-daughter dropped some "hints" on why they got separated.

Last Sunday, November 27, KC finally admitted on national television that her relationship with Piolo Pascual is officially over during a one-on-one interview with co-host Boy Abunda on “The Buzz.”

Piolo Pascual

When Boy Abunda asked her the reason why they broke up, the host/actress revealed that the basic things that she is looking for in a man fell short with Piolo saying "May mga hinahanap ako na napaka-basic lang na hanapin ng isang babae sa isang boyfriend, isang lalake."

But KC refused to give the details as she don't want to demean the former boyfriend.

“PJ (Piolo’s nickname) knows exactly why we broke up. He knows exactly why,” was the thing she said.

In an interview aired on “TV Patrol” last Nov. 28, Piolo, who just arrived in Manila from a concert in Japan, said: “I don’t think I’ve anything else to say.

“You know, KC has already said her piece. Hayaan na lang muna natin doon kasi it’s a very sensitive issue. Hindi naman biro ang pinagdaanan naming dalawa,” he added.

Piolo asked for the public's understanding because break-ups are difficult to experience, much so that they are both celebrities.

“Ang hinihingi ko na lang ay pag-iintindi sa mga tao. Hindi madali yung proseso. Hindi rin madali yung maraming nakaabang, maraming naghihintay at maraming nakikialam. Ang sa akin lang, hayaan na lang muna kami, especially si Kristina. It’s not easy,” the actor appealed.

Last January, Piolo Pascual admitted live on "The Buzz" that KC became his girlfriend since October 21, 2010. Will he grace the same show in the coming days to say his side on the break-up story?

Mark Bautista, Anne Curtis & Cristine Reyes Pulled Out from US Concert

Mark Bautista, Anne Curtis and Cristine Reyes were pulled-out by Viva Artists Agency (VAA) from a series of shows called "Handog Pasasalamat (A Thanksgiving Unity Concert)" which was held last November 18 and 19 "due to the failure of the show's producers to comply with many crucial contractual obligations."

Here is the statement from Jia Lo of Viva Artists Agency:

"VIVA Artists Agency deeply regrets to announce that it has decided to pull out its stars Anne Curtis, Cristine Reyes and Mark Bautista from a series of shows billed as 'Handog Pasasalamat (A Thanksgiving Unity Concert)' scheduled to be mounted in Los Angeles and San Francisco, California, USA on November 18 and 19, 2011.

“The decision was made due to the failure of the show’s producers to comply with many crucial contractual obligations. Said failure compromises the security and welfare of the artists and their entourage, which is of paramount importance to VAA. VAA has a long history of successful shows in the US that proceeded without encountering any unfortunate incidents, such as this one. It sincerely apologizes to the fans who have been looking forward to seeing Anne, Cristine and Mark live on the aforementioned shows. Anne’s fans can expect to see her next year when she holds her solo concert tour.”

Shalani Soledad and Roman Romulo are set to tie the knot on January 22, 2012, earlier than their preferred date in February.

Shalani Soledad

KC Concepcion broke her silence on "The Buzz" last Sunday regarding her breakup with Piolo Pascual.

When Boy Abunda asked her the reason why they broke up, the host/actress revealed that the basic things that she is looking for in a man fell short with Piolo.

Meanwhile, TV Patrol was able to interview Piolo Pascual on Monday after he arrived from a concert in Japan together with other Star Magic talents.

Piolo asked the public to respect his privacy and to understand what he and KC are going through right now.

"I don't think I have anything else to say. You know, KC has said her piece so hayaan na lang muna natin dun kasi it’s a very sensitive issue. Hindi naman biro ang pinagdaanan naming dalawa,” he said.

"So hihingin ko lang siguro, pag-iintindi sa mga tao."

"Hindi madali yung proseso. Hindi rin madali yung maraming nakaabang, maraming naghihintay, at maraming nakikialam."

"So, ang sa akin, sana hayaan na lang muna kami, especially si Kristina, it's not easy," he added.

Leila de Lima Cautious in GMA's House Arrest

Leila de Lima, the Secretary of Justice, warned Pasay City Regional Trial Court Branch 112 Judge Jesus Mupas on Friday to be “extra careful” in granting the request of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for house arrest.

De Lima is not in favor of the house arrest because she said the administration wants to avoid the perception that it is giving special treatment to the former President.

“Is it not possible to have her detained in a facility with all needed amenities and that’s comfortable enough for her rather than house arrest?” De Lima said in an ambush interview.

Arroyo's lawyer Jose Flaminiano had asked the Pasay RTC to allow house arrest for the former President after doctors from the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig advised that she was fit to be discharged. They are set to file a motion for house arrest tomorrow, November 29.

Albie Casino is consistent when he said in previous interviews that he will keep silent and will no longer comment on Andi Eigenmann's pregnancy. And now that Andi has given birth to a healthy baby girl, Albie keeps mum despite the fact that Andi mentioned on her Posterous blog months ago (which she also deleted) that he is indeed the father.

Albie's silence is due to the fact that anything that he will say will explode into another issue against him. So perhaps he'll just let everything cool down from now and face the music next year when there's no more prying eyes on him.

Arroyo Mug Shot, Real or Photoshopped?

Arroyo mug shot - real or photoshopped?

Arroyo Mug Shot

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is questioning the authenticity of the mug shots that made its way to various blogs and social networking sites, and even in broadsheets!

In fact, the Philippine Daily Inquirer published the controversial mug shot of the former President both in its online and print versions. However, they noted that it did not come from the Pasay City Regional Trial Court but was sent by someone who requested anonymity.

Chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome said there were discrepancies with the caption of the official mug shots and the published versions.

"I would like to state for the record that the published pictures are not the authentic mug shot photos of Rep. Gloria Arroyo," Bartolome said in an interview by TV Patrol on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo said released a statement saying that the published Arroyo mug shots on newspaper and on the internet are fake.

According to reports, Robredo earlier said that the print on the unauthentic photos appeared to have been “photoshopped.”

Maguindanao Massacre Site Visited by Relatives of the 58 Victims

Relatives of the 58 victims of the Maguindanao Massacre converged at the site in Sition Masalay, Barangay Salman in Ampatuan town, Maguindanao on Wednesday, November 23, for the second anniversary since the heinous crime was committed.

A marker was built where the names of the 58 victims are written as a way to commemorate them.

Here is the Wikipedia entry that marked the Philippines as the second most dangerous country in the world for journalists, next to Iraq:

The Maguindanao massacre, also known as the Ampatuan massacre after the town where the mass graves were found, occurred on the morning of November 23, 2009, in the town of Ampatuan in Maguindanao province, on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. While the victims were on their way to file a certificate of candidacy for Esmael Mangudadatu, vice mayor of Buluan town, they were kidnapped and brutally killed. Mangudadatu was challenging Datu Unsay mayor Andal Ampatuan, Jr., son of the incumbent Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan, Sr., in the forthcoming Maguindanao gubernatorial election, part of the national elections in 2010. The 58 people killed included Mangudadatu's wife, his two sisters, journalists, lawyers, aides, and motorists who were witnesses or were mistakenly identified as part of the convoy.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called the Maguindanao massacre the single deadliest event for journalists in history. At least 34 journalists are known to have died in the massacre. In a statement, CPJ executive director Joel Simon noted that the killings, "appears to be single deadliest event for the press since 1992, when CPJ began keeping detailed records on journalist deaths." The CPJ further noted that, "Even as we tally the dead in this horrific massacre, our initial research indicates that this is the deadliest single attack on the press ever documented by CPJ." Even before the Maguindanao massacre, the CPJ had labeled the Philippines the second most dangerous country for journalists, second only to Iraq.

Arroyo Mug Shot is Illegal According to Sen. Miriam

Arroyo mug shot was leaked and went viral in social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Arroyo Mug Shot

But according to Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, it's illegal as the former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's right to privacy was violated when her mug shots were leaked by the authorities and even published by the media.

"When the mug shot of the accused is taken, could it be a violation of her personal right to privacy if this is published? The answer is yes," Senator Santiago told reporters.

Sen. Santiago also questioned the newspaper and websites that published Arroyo's mug shot.

"It is another question whether a newspaper or a website can publish a mug shot," she said. "It is not a usual, common photograph. It already suggests guilt on the part of the person. What’s more is that it catches the individual at his most embarrassing moment."

Senator Panfilo Lacson, on the other hand, has a different opinion regarding the mug shot.

"Lahat na mina-mug shot, pwedeng i-release anytime. That’s part of court records. Pag court records, that becomes public document," he also told reporters on Tuesday.

The Philippine National Police (PNP), however, questions the authenticity of the mug shots that made its way to the internet.

The PNP Chief likewise said that authorities are currently tracking down the source of the leaked photos.

Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is currently under hospital arrest at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City after the Commission on Elections (Comelec) filed charges against her for electoral sabotage over the weekend.

Gail Bautista, Another Suspect in the Ramgen Revilla Murder Case

Gail Bautista, the third child of former Senator Ramon Revilla to Genelyn Bautista, is now being implicated as one of the masterminds in the Ramgen Revilla murder case.

The 20-year-old Gail Bautista joins her siblings Ramona and Ramon Joseph "RJ" Bautista in the list of suspected masterminds for the crime.

It was Gail who had an exchange of heated text messages with Ramgen two weeks before the latter was murdered.

In a report by ABS-CBN's "Bandila" last night, November 21, one of the murder suspects--Glaiza Visda--revealed that Ramgen's siblings, including Gail, are the "masterminds."

"Yun pong mga kapatid ang nagpapapatay... at saka may mga Revilla din daw pong nagpapapatay," Visda said.

She added that Gail, together with RJ and Ramona, hired an ex-soldier to kill Ramgen and it was motivated by financial troubles.

Glaiza Visda is scheduled to formally issue a statement against Gail Bautista this Thursday, November 24. The statement will strengthen the case against the third Bautista sibling to be implicated as one of the masterminds for the murder case.

Janelle Manahan on Ramgen's Murder: 'Ilalaban Kita No Matter What It Takes'

Janelle Manahan, Ramgen Revilla’s girlfriend, expressed her emotions in a letter she sent to "The Buzz" regarding the murder of her boyfriend.

As aired on The Buzz last Sunday, November 20, Janelle wrote:

“Nasaktan ako nang malaman ko at patuloy na nasasaktan every time napapanood ko sa news. Alam ko kung gaano kamahal ni Ramgen ang pamilya niya. How clean his intentions are at kung gaano siya kabuti bilang tao."

"Mahal na mahal kayo ni Ramgen. Sana wag kayo titigil hangga’t hindi nahahanap ang hustisya na nararapat para sa kanya."

Janelle added that she will also help in finding justice for Ram.

“Never ako titigil till I find you justice. You didn’t deserve to die that way kaya ilalaban kita no matter what it takes,” she said in the letter because she cannot speak and can only communicate through writing.

Janelle survived a gunshot on the face and several stab wounds during the tragic incident that killed Ram last October 28, in BF Homes, Parañaque City. She had her second surgery last November 7.

When asked about her condition, she said: “Mas mabuti na po ang pakiramdam ko ngayon although physically weak pa po ako so kailangan ko ng tulong from simply sitting down, standing up. Emotionally naman po, so far I’m trying to be strong on my own. They say I might need a psychiatrist, if gusto ko."

Luis Manzano Finally Admits Jennylyn Mercado is His Girlfriend

Luis Manzano has formally revealed that he and Kapuso star Jennylyn Mercado are in a relationship.

Luis made the admission via an interview by PEP last November 16 saying that the dating stage is over and their relationship is now formal.

“Yeah, that’s formal na that we’re together...Ang sabi nga namin we’re just waiting for the right moment. I’ve been happy naman all through out. Kumbaga it was sealing the dealing. Of course, I’m very happy [when she said yes]. Sinasabi naman namin na dun din papunta. It’s only a matter of time, ang daming pinapangunahan pa nga kami.”

Manzano also said that nothing has changed, only the "label," and that how happy they were before is pretty much exactly the same way right now.

"I’m very happy. Napapansin ng ibang tao na medyo mas extra yung smiles ko. According to them, blooming nga daw ako,” he joked.

The host/actor admitted on his weekly showbiz program "E-Live" last May that he and Mercado were dating after weeks of speculations and alleged sightings together in Boracay during the Holy Week.

Luis also revealed on the said episode that he already introduced the Kapuso actress to her mom, Gov. Vilma Santos, during a show in Batangas.

Minutes after Luis Manzano confessed on E-Live, Jennylyn Mercado followed suit and confirmed on the opposite program, Star Talk, that she and Luis are dating.

Ampatuan Massacre Victims to File Case Against Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

Ampatuan massacre victims, the relatives of the 57 people massacred in 2009 in Maguindanao, are suing former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo over the killings, which they claim she could have prevented, their lawyer said.

The Maguindanao Massacre, dubbed as the country's worst politically motivated bloodbath and the worst single killing of journalists in the world (32 media workers dead), is now on its 2nd year tomorrow, November 23, and justice is still elusive to the victims' relatives.

Two Arroyo allies, including former Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr., are among about 100 suspects being tried on murder charges, and now they are about to file charges to the former President who has been arrested last week for electoral fraud.

Although Arroyo has condemned and denied any knowledge of the killings, lawyer Harry Roque believed she should have known that Ampatuan and his son were a danger.

"She not only funded and armed the Ampatuans but gave them the sense of influence. She could have prevented it. She knew about possible dangers," he said.

The lawsuit is set to be filed today, November 22, seeking 15 million pesos in damages.

Arroyo Under Arrest, Her Lawyer Challenges Court

Arroyo arrest is being contested by her lawyer.

Arroyo arrest

The lawyer of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is contesting the court's jurisdiction to order the arrest of his client on electoral fraud.

Raul Lambino, the former President's lawyer, said the court will hear a motion today to lift the arrest warrant on the grounds the criminal suit should have been filed elsewhere.

"We feel that there has been a violation of due process when they railroaded this case and filed the information at a wrong court," he told ABS-CBN.

Lambino added that the case should be dealt with by a special court--the Sandiganbayan--which handles cases involving public officials.

"The court should not have issued a warrant of arrest," he said.

The Pasay City RTC ordered the arrest of the 64-year-old former President last Friday after the COMELEC filed election fraud charges on the same day.

GMA is facing the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted by the lower court in Manila.

Gloria Arroyo is the second Philippine leader to stand trial. Her predecessor Joseph Estrada was convicted of plunder in 2007 but pardoned by Arroyo 40 days later.

The current President Noynoy Aquino, however, is not bent on giving pardon to GMA.

Run for Pasig 2011 is Largest Footrace this Year with More than 80,000 Runners

Run for Pasig 2011 - Pasig River Run is Largest Footrace in PHL this Year with 80,000 Runners.

A total of 86,547 runners showed up and participated in the Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP)’s “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River” Sunday (Nov 20), making it the largest single racing event in the country this year.

According to ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI)’s chief strategic officer Monchet Olives, the turnout in the advocacy run was five times bigger than the 16,000 participants at another run this year organized by a pharmaceutical company.

He said over 120,000 people registered and paid the fees including slots that were sponsored. The figure was higher than last year’s “10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River” that broke the Guinness World record for the largest number of participants in a racing event, with 116,000 runners.

He also stressed that the organizers “focused on the experience” this year as they arranged a festive setting for this year’s runners with bands from different universities, the military, and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

“We closed down both sides of the Roxas Boulevard. That’s never been done before,” he said.

AFI managing director Gina Lopez, meanwhile, said that the contingents from schools, government agencies, the police and military, non-government organizations, business sector, and private institutions that composed the massive crowd only proved that they want a cleaner Pasig River for the future generation.

“It shows who we are as a people. The numbers don’t matter, there’s no doubt about it. Students came here. The army and the police were here. The private sector was here in full force,” said Lopez.

The charity 21K race organized by the network’s Cable Channels and Print Media Group was participated by KBPIP sponsors and partners, together with the country’s top businessmen and executives such as ABS-CBN Corporation chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III and Ayala Corporation president Fernando Zobel de Ayala and heartthrob Piolo Pascual.

The participants raced around Metro Manila and ran past the Estero de Paco where last year’s rehabilitation of Pasig River was made.

At the post-race program, Gina Lopez led the heads and representatives from government and private sectors in the river warrior dance as a sign of commitment to clean the river.

Meanwhile, Olives revealed that this year’s run had a good online registration turnout with 14,000 paid registrants.

He also disclosed that they are already planning to take on the historic EDSA in 2012.

“We’re going to play heavy on kids next year. If you get them to join, you also draw their parents,” he added.

The KBPIP’s strategy is to clean up the esteros that drain into the Pasig River. In 2010, the KBPIP organized the world-record breaking 10.10.10 run to raise consciousness for the rehabilitation of the river and its tributaries, particularly the rehabilitation of Estero de Paco, a 2.9-kilometer tributary of the Pasig River in Manila.

Lopez said in order to successfully clean the entire river, they must first clean the water that goes into it, and change the way people look at the river through events such as the annual “Run for the Pasig River.”

Sarah Geronimo and Gerald Anderson Reunite in 'Won't Last A Day Without You'

Their first team-up was a box-office success. Now, Sarah Geronimo reunites with Gerald Anderson to face a box-office challenge - to surpass the earnings of their first film "Catch Me...I'm In Love."

Sarah Geronimo is Facing a Big Box-Office Challenge

Sarah Geronimo is the former box-office queen who held the record of starring in--You Changed My Life--the highest-grossing Filipino movie of all time until it was outgrossed by two films this year from the same producers.

"No Other Woman" and "Praybeyt Benjamin" have broken box-office records this year by beating the earnings of the Sarah Geronimo-John Lloyd Cruz team up. And the pressure is on Geronimo as her second movie with Gerald Anderson is about to be shown later this month.

"Won't Last a Day Without You" is the sequel to the first Sarah-Gerald team-up "Catch Me...I'm In Love" which is the first box-office hit of 2011. Just like the first movie, it's also a co-production between Star Cinema and Viva Films, the winning team-up that made box-office waves this year for "Praybeyt Benjamin" and "No Other Woman" which are now the 1st and 2nd highest-grossing Filipino movie of all time, respectively.

Another factor that will make Sarah very nervous is that "Won't Last A Day Without You" is facing two box-office giants from Hollywood - "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1" which opened yesterday and "Happy Feet Two" which is also showing on November 23.

Now the question remains: Will Sarah and Gerald's "Won't Last A Day Without You" continue the trend in the Philippine box-office and will it surpass the box-office gross of "Catch Me...I'm In Love"?

We'll see.

Arroyo arrested for electoral fraud and corruption

Arroyo arrested on Friday by a trial court for vote rigging and corruption cases.

Arroyo arrested
Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo

Former president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been on hospital arrest on Friday as ordered by the Pasay City Regional Trial Court for electoral fraud and corruption.

A warrant of arrest against the former-president-turned-Pampanga-Congresswoman was served around 6:00 p.m. yesterday, November 18, at the St. Lukes’s Medical Center by officials from the Southern Police District.

In a press conference, Senior Superintendent James Bucayu said Mrs. Arroyo was placed under hospital arrest but her condition prevented her from completing booking requirements. Depending on Mrs. Arroyo's physical condition, it's either she'll stay at the hospital or be detained at the Southern Police District.

Judge Jesus B. Mupas of the Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) ordered the arrest of the former president right after the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) filed an electoral sabotage case against her yesterday morning.

Jesse M. Robredo of the DILG said that they will let Mrs. Arroyo choose where she wants to be put her under arrest, it's either in the hospital or at her house.

"The administration will accord correct treatment to Mrs. Arroyo being a former president, because she’s not well. We will accord due respect to the [former] president," he said.

Furthermore, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the Palace will grant Mrs. Arroyo's choice of detention in house or hospital but if ever she tries to escape, she will be constrained and put to an appropriate detention facility.

"For as long as she stays in the hospital or maybe at home, we will not insist on bringing her to any detention facility, but the moment lumabas siya, then our law enforcers will be constrained to arrest her, and put her in an appropriate detention facility," she said.

The Commission on Elections filed an electoral sabotage case against former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and other officials on Friday morning.

COMELEC chairman Sixto Brillantes, via a phone patch interview with ANC News, said election commissioners had voted, 5-2, in favor of filing charges against the former President. The other commissioners who voted for the filing were Elias Yusoph, Rene Sarmiento, Gus Lagman and Robert Lim. The two who voted against were election official Lintang Bedol, and former Maguindanao official Andal Ampatuan Sr.

The COMELEC also petitioned RTC Judge Jesus Mupas to issue a hold departure order against the former president who is about to leave for Singapore today for medical treatment.

The joint panel however resolved to dismiss the charges against former first gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" T. Arroyo, for "insufficiency of evidence to establish probable cause."
