Hacienda Luisita: SC Ordered Distribution of Hacienda Luisita to Tenant Farmers
Hacienda Luisita, the vast agricultural estate owned by the family of President Benigno Aquino III, was ordered by the Supreme Court to be distributed to tenant farmers.The high court's decision was unanimous, 14-0, in a 56-page resolution penned by Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco and promulgated on November 23, Wednesday.
The Supreme Court stressed in the resolution that “control over agricultural lands must always be in the hands of the farmers” and pointed out that allowing the 6,296 beneficiaries to remain stockholders would never allow them “gain control given the present proportion of shareholdings.”
