Pedro Calungsod Named 2nd Pinoy Saint

Pedro Calungsod, the 17th century Visayan teen martyr, was canonized on Sunday, October 21, at the Vatican City.

Pedro Calungsod and six other Catholics was canonized via a holy mass led by Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on Sunday. He was formally beatified on March 5, 2000, by Blessed Pope John Paul II. He became the second Filipino saint after the sainthood of Lorenzo Ruiz in 1987.

The young Calungsod was a migrant, sacristan and missionary catechist, who along with Blessed Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom in Guam for their missionary work in 1672.

While in Guam, Calungsod preached Christianity to the Chamorro (natives) people through catechism, while baptizing infants, children and adults at the risk and expense of being persecuted and eventually murdered. Through Calungsod and San Vitores' missionary efforts, many native Chamorros converted to Roman Catholicism.
