Cookie Monster Crater Discovered in Mercury

A Cookie Monster crater was spotted in planet Mercury. NASA posted the photo on Flickr, Sesame Street responded.

A Cookie Monster-looking crater was photographed by MESSENGER spacecraft last August 29, 2012.

According to SPACE.com, NASA posted the photo on the Flickr page of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. with the question: “Anyone Else Think This Looks Like the Cookie Monster?”

"Sesame Street," on its Tumblr page, responded to NASA's question saying:

"We think so. Now that we think about it, maybe Mercury is Cookie Monster, or his distant cousin maybe (?), and it’s circling the Sun in hopes of om nom noming some space cookies or something."

"Sesame Street" is the long-running television program produced by the Children's Television Workshop (CTW) which created the well-loved character Cookie Monster.

In a more scientific explanation, the Cookie Monster crater was said to be a giant circle created when a space rock crushed on the said planet long ago. The two smaller craters, on the other hand, dot the upper edge of the main impact site. These were formed when lesser asteroids smashed into the planet after the larger strike. It just so happen that the two little circles that were formed were parallel to each other and located on top of the giant circle that formed the face-like image of the Sesame Street character.
