9 Pinoys Among 2012 'Young Global Shapers'

Nine outstanding young Filipinos were chosen as among the 2012 “Young Global Shapers” of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The young achievers are Anna Rosario Oposa, Mayor Maria Carmela Alvarez of San Vicente in Palawan, Ponce Ernest Samaniego, Jay Michael Jaboneta, Dr. Bryan Albert Lim, Eleanor Rosa Pinugu, Mildred Ople, television host Bianca Gonzalez, and Alexandra Amanda Eduque.

“The Young Global Shapers are exceptional achievers who initiated projects that have positive impact in the community,” said ABS-CBN news anchor Karen Davila, WEF Young Global Leader 2010 and Founding Curator for the YGS Manila Hub.

The nine individuals – whose ages range from 20 to 30 – have been accepted by the WEF as potential leaders because of their positive impact in their communities, said Davila.

Oposa, 23, co-founded the Save Philippine Seas movement to protect the world’s richest marine life, and “Isko Cleans UP,” a waste management program in the University of the Philippines-Diliman. She is the daughter of Ramon Magsaysay awardee, environmentalist lawyer Tony Oposa.

Alvarez, 24, the youngest female mayor of San Vicente, has a degree in International Business Administration with a concentration in Environmental Technology and Global Marketing Management from Babson College in Boston. She aims to transform the town into a tourist destination municipality using sustainable development technology to preserve its natural environment and help residents become self-reliant in terms of its present and future needs.

Samaniego, 21, is co-founder and chief executive officer of Outliers, a social enterprise that serves as an outsourced business expertise for non-profit organizations.

Jaboneta, 30, founded the movement Philippine Funds for Little Kids that helps schoolchildren in Zamboanga City who had to swim to go to school. He was the first and former New Media Head of the Presidential Communications Operations Office under President Aquino. He is also a board member of the Kabayanihan Foundation and Team Pinoy, Inc.
Lim is a practicing physician in San Pablo, Laguna. He is a program consultant of the Asian Institute of Management Zuellig Center for Asian Business Transformation, a research associate of the UP Universal Health Care Study Group, and the proponent of the Quisumbing-Escandor Film Festival for Health and serves as adviser in various health-related projects.

Pinugu is the founder of Mano Amiga Academy, Inc, a non-profit school that provides underprivileged Filipino children access to fourteen years of high quality education (K-12th grade), and all other support they need to have a better life. After two years of raising funds for the students’ scholarships through private donations and corporate partnerships, she decided to establish a social enterprise that would generate a steady income for Mano Amiga, and at the same time give employment opportunities to the mothers of the students.

Ople, 25, is an advocate of countryside development through the adoption of innovative agricultural technology with profitable business concepts and ideas. She is also one of the founders of the Hagonoy Young Leaders Program and has worked with the Ayala Foundation on youth leadership and development projects. She is currently taking up law.

Gonzalez was recently appointed as Special Advocate for Children for the United Nations Children’s Fund-Philippines.

Eduque, 21, is involved with various humanitarian projects and endeavors in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Philippines. She has been working with the organization for about seven years now, and is the founder and chairperson of the Habitat for Humanity Philippines Youth Council.

Davila said of the nine achievers, only Oposa, Pinugu and Alvarez were invited by the WEF to the 2012 conference in Davos, Switzerland next week.

The WEF is a Geneva-based non-profit organization best known for its annual meeting in Davos. It is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas.

The organization launched last year the Global Shapers community aimed at providing the youth with a global platform to shape the future – integrating personal, community and global dimensions. This community will help youth develop their leadership potential to serve society.

The Global Shapers community includes extraordinary young individuals with great potential for future leadership roles in society. Aged between 20 and 30 years, they represent all walks of life and share a spirit of entrepreneurship in the global public interest, the WEF said.

Matteo Guidicelli Releases Music Video for 'Kaba' (My Cactus Heart OST)

Matteo Guidicelli revives "Kaba," a Tootsie Guevarra original, for the theme song of the star cinema romantic comedy "My Cactus Heart."

The film also stars Matteo Guidicelli with real life GF Maja Salvador and My Binondo Girl star Xian Lim.

"Kaba" Lyrics:

Di ko malaman ang nadarama
Sa tuwing ikay aking nakikita
May kung ano sa damdamin
At abot-abot ang kaba

Sa araw-araw ay nagtataka?
Ang puso kong ito, o bakit ba?
Ang kilos koy nababago,
Na halos naandiyan ka na.

[CHORUS:]

Sarah Geronimo to be Paired with Richard Gutierrez in Upcoming Film?

Sarah Geronimo will team up with Kapuso top leading man Richard Gutierrez according to a report by Manila Bulletin.

After the successful pairing of Kapuso hunk Richard Gutierrez to Kapamilya stars Anne Curtis and KC Concepcion in the past, it looks like Sarah Geronimo is next to the line-up.

If a Kim Chiu-Aljur Abrenica team-up is impossible, the Richard Gutierrez-Sarah Geronimo pairing will be made possible by Viva Films since the Survivor Philippines host, together with his siblings Raymond and Ruffa, signed a contract with film outfit last January 25. And since Sarah Geronimo is a Viva talent, there will be no problem with the project.

Grace Ibuna a.k.a Ex of Gabby Concepcion Might Face Court Over Iggy Arroyo's Sudden Death

Grace Ibuna, the common-law wife of the late Rep. Iggy Arroyo of Negros Occidental, may be sued by Alicia Arroyo, the legal wife, for allegedly claiming she is the spouse and giving the go-signal to remove the life-support system on their clinically-dead husband.

Alicia said she would never have pulled the plug on Iggy.

Atty. Lorna Kapunan, Alicia Arroyo's lawyer, said they are planning to file charges against Grace Ibuna for declaring that she is the legal wife of the late congressman.

"To misrepresent that you are the spouse, when in fact you are not, to misrepresent or to actually go ahead and pull the plug, these are all multiple criminal offenses," Kapunan said.

Alicia and Iggy filed for marriage annulment in 2005 but it was never approved by court making her the present legal wife.

Iggy, according to her, stopped going to their family home in La Vista, Quezon City since then.

Grace Lee denied the rumor on Friday that she allegedly dated President Noynoy Aquino III.

Grace Lee is a 28-year-old radio and tv personality of Korean descent. She grew up in the Philippines and considers herself a Filipina in heart.

The rumor was started by DJ Mo Twister, who is currently in the US, via a simple tweet last January 26:

"We are talking about Grace Lee's date last night with President Aquino. #itsmorefuninthephilippines."

In an interview with "Balitanghali" on GMA News TV on Friday, the Radio and TV host Lee denied that she started the rumor herself but she did not say that it's not true.

"Wala pa akong nirerelease na statements and I have never spoken of him [P-Noy] publicly yet,” she said.

Grace Lee did not comment any further and passed the ball on the President's court.

“You know, I have the highest respects for the President and I respect his privacy. I leave it up to him to speak on the matter...best thing to do now ay abangan na lang nila [kung] ano ang sasabihin ni President,” Lee added.

Grace Lee first met President Noynoy in June last year during the inauguration of the Korea Electric Power Corp. power plant in Cebu, where she served as host.

Fil-Am UFC Fighter Mark Muñoz Injured, Sonnen Gets Another Opponent

The upcoming Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) event dubbed “UFC on Fox 2” has undergone a major change, as Filipino-American Mark "The Filipino Wrecking Machine" Muñoz is pulled off the fight card due to injury. His opponent Chael Sonnen will face English middleweight contender Michael Bisping instead.

This was announced by UFC president Dana White recently. Supposedly, the winner of the Muñoz - Sonnen bout will face Anderson Silva for the UFC Middleweight title in a proposed stadium-sized UFC event in Sao Paolo, Brazil, while Bisping and Damian Maia will headline the third installment of the UFC on Fox series. Now, Maia will fight Chris Weidman to complete the 3-fight card.

Meanwhile, the main event featuring former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans and Phil Davis will go on as scheduled. Balls (SkyCable Channel 34), the home of the UFC in the Philippines, will broadcast the event on January 29 at 11:30am.

The orthodox Evans, 16-1-1, is currently riding a three-fight win streak, including a second-round technical knockout victory over Tito Ortiz in August last year. Davis, 9-0, on the other hand, considers Evans as his toughest competitor so far. The two fighters were previously scheduled to headline UFC 133 but David suffered a knee injury and pulled out of the fight with Ortiz sliding in to take his spot.

Top middleweights Sonnen and Bisping are both known for their gift of gab. Both fighters already produced notable soundbites in the run-up to the fight. Fans expect fireworks in and out of the Octagon.“I am going to knock the teeth out of this snot nosed Brit who calls himself royalty, who calls himself a Count,” Sonnen said.

Get your UFC fix on Balls! Balls channel is available on SkyCable Platinum, SkyCable Gold, SkyCable Silver and over 200 quality cable operators nationwide. For more updates, visit www.ballschannel.tv and follow us on facebook.com/BallsChannel and @ballschannel on Twitter.

Abner Fights Anew for Freedom of Ailing Inmates

Broadcast journalist Abner Mercado will once again campaign for the freedom of the elderly and ailing inmates in different correctional institutions this Thursday (Jan 26) on “Krusada” following the recent deaths of some of these convicts.

In 2008 and 2011, Abner told of the stories of the elderly and seriously sick inmates whose only wish was to be granted executive clemency so they could spend their dying days with their loved ones.

This advocacy is close to Abner’s heart. He shares, “I empathize with those who have been doomed to spend the rest of their days behind bars in a decrepit condition, and whose only way out is death.”

Abner met Esmarie “Cheng” Salazar in June 2011. Cheng was a 52-year old inmate at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong who was suffering from stage four of breast cancer. She applied for a pardon, but didn’t live to see her request granted.

Cheng’s story is similar to that of Querubin Libo-on, a convict at the New Bilibid Prison. With his request for clemency not granted, Querubin died of throat cancer inside the prison.

Did President Benigno Aquino III free any ailing inmate last Christmas? Will terminally ill convicts ever be given executive clemency in order for them to spend their last days with their families?

Listen, take part, and be one with Abner’s crusade because it takes more than words to make a stand. Watch “Krusada” this Thursday (Jan 26) after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN, or earlier on DZMM TeleRadyo (SkyCable Channel 26), 9:15 PM.

Year of the Dragon Begins on January 23 - Chinese New Year (Holiday)

Year of the Dragon begins on January 23, 2011, Monday, which is a non-working holiday as declared by Malacanang!

January 23 is declared by Malacanang as a special non-working holiday in observance of Chinese New Year.

2012 is year of the Dragon.

Here is an excerpt from the Presidential proclamation:

“The Chinese nationals all over the world will celebrate Spring Festival, popularly known as the Chinese New Year, which is one of the most revered and festive events celebrated not only in China but also in the Philippines by both Chinese Filipinos and ordinary Filipinos as well; and the joint celebration is a manifestation of our solidarity with our Chinese Filipino brethren who have been part of our lives in many respects as a country and as a people; 23 January 2012 may be declared as a special (non-working) day without detriment to public interest.”

And for those who are born in the year of the dragon like me, check out what I've found on the internet:

THE DRAGON

Personality

Occupying the 5th position in the Chinese Zodiac, the Dragon is the mightiest of the signs. Dragons symbolize such character traits as dominance and ambition. Dragons prefer to live by their own rules and if left on their own, are usually successful. They’re driven, unafraid of challenges, and willing to take risks. They’re passionate in all they do and they do things in grand fashion. Unfortunately, this passion and enthusiasm can leave Dragons feeling exhausted and interestingly, unfulfilled.

While Dragons frequently help others, rarely will they ask for help. Others are attracted to Dragons, especially their colorful personalities, but deep down, Dragons prefer to be alone. Perhaps that is because they’re most successful when working alone. Their preference to be alone can come across as arrogance or conceitedness, but these qualities aren’t applicable. Dragons have tempers that can flare fast!

Health

Considering their hard-working nature, Dragons are healthy overall. They do get stressed and suffer from periodic tension/headaches, likely because they take so many risks. Dragons could benefit from incorporating mild activity into their lives. Yoga or walking would be good as these activities can work both their minds and their bodies.

Career

Dragons prefer leading to being led. Jobs that allow them to express their creativity are good choices. Some good careers include: inventor, manager, computer analyst, lawyer, engineer, architect, broker, and sales person.

Relationships

Dragons will give into love, but won’t give up their independence. Because they have quick, sometimes vengeful tempers, their partners need to be tough-skinned. Dragons enjoy others who are intriguing, and when they find the right partners, they’ll usually commit to that person for life.

Janelle Manahan Exuded Extra-Ordinary Strength on 'Bottomline' Interview

Janelle Manahan, the girlfriend of slain actor Ramgen Revilla and star witness for the murder of the latter, guested on "The Bottomline" (aired last Saturday night) not just to talk about the murder case but also to discuss other matters like the leaked private video and being a battered girlfriend.

During the January 14 episode of "The Bottomline with Boy Abunda," Janelle Manahan took the ‘hot seat’ and shed light on nasty rumors concerning the highly publicized murder case - from her thoughts on the development of the case they filed; her first-hand accounts on the the rift among the Revilla siblings, malicious uploading of a private video of her with Ramgen; and on the allegation that she was a ‘battered girlfriend.’

But among the issues tackled, Janelle surprised everyone when she admitted that she was a battered girlfriend and that she and Ramgen have more sex videos that could possibly make its way to the internet in the coming days.

Some 'Bottomline' panelists were awed at how Janelle handled her interview answering hard-hitting questions considering that she's still in recovery stage after surviving stab and gun shot wounds that almost took her life.

Janelle was calm all throughout the interview with occassional tears which she cannot hold.

But what impressed the panel the most (and probably the televiewers, too) was Janelle's determination to seek justice on the murder of her boyfriend and her willingness to forgive the people behind it.

Golden Globe Winners are Now Oscars Frontrunners

Golden Globe winners for the motion picture category are "The Artist" and "The Descendants."

The French romance film "The Artist" tops this year's Golden Globe film winners for bagging the Golden Globe Best Picture for Musical/Comedy category. It also nabbed a best actor for musical/comedy trophy for Jean Dujardin and a nod for best musical score.

The Artist is a film Michel Hazanavicius, which takes place in Hollywood between 1927 and 1932 and focuses on a declining male film star and a rising actress, as silent cinema grows out of fashion and is replaced by the talkies. Most of the film itself is silent; it is shown in black-and-white, and has received wide praise from critics and many accolades. The film debuted at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival where its male star Dujardin won the Best Actor Award.

Alexander Payne's "The Descendants," on the other hand, won the Best Picture Drama and a Best Actor for Drama courtesy of George Clooney.

The Descendants is a film based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings. The film also stars Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard and Shailene Woodley, and was directed by Alexander Payne, with a screenplay by Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. The film premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

Despite the wins for Best Picture and Best Actor, both "The Artist" and "The Descendant" lost the Best Director award to Martin Scorsese (for "Hugo").

"The Descendants" won in the drama category, and took a best actor award for George Clooney, where he topped his buddie Brad Pitt. The two will compete against Dujardin for a fairly contested best actor Oscar.

Meanwhile, the Best Actress Drama trophy went to Meryl Streep ("The Iron Lady") and the Best Actress Comedy/Musical was given to Michelle Williams ("My Week with Marilyn").

The Best Supporting Actor winner was Christopher Plummer for "Beginners" and the Best Supporting Actress trophy went to
Octavia Spencer for "The Help."

Based on the results of the 69th Golden Globe Awards, we can expect the 2012 Oscars to be contested by the films "The Artist," "The Descendant," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "Midnight in Paris" and "My Week with Marilyn."

The frontrunner for Best Animated Film would be "The Adventures of Tintin" while a shoo-in for Best Foreign Language Film is Iran's "A Separation."

Internet Addiction Has Similar Consequences to Alcohol and Drug Addiction, Study Says

Internet addiction affects the brain negatively just like alcohol and drug addiction according to a recent study in China.

Internet Addiction

The Internet addiction disorder (IAD) was found to disrupt the nerve wiring in the brains of a number of teenagers in the study causing a level of brain damage normally seen in heavy substance abusers.

17 internet addicts in China were compared with 16 who were not addicted, both groups consist of young people. The study shows that the brain of the teenagers who are addicted to the internet has alterations similar to the brain of people addicted to alohol and drugs; whereas there were no findings to the 16 teenagers who are not internet addicts.

Furthermore, when the IAD-diagnosed teenagers were denied access to their computers, some of them experienced distress and withdrawal symptoms similar to drug addicts.

Dr. Hao Lei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences claims that evidence of disruption to "white matter" nerve fibres connecting vital parts of the brain involved in emotions, decision making, and self-control manifested.

Scientists believe that the damage is caused by disrupted myelin, the fatty insulating covering that helps nerves work.

However, internet addiction is not yet considered as a "genuine" addiction because some scientists are questioning the validity of the study. For now, they just consider it as an "impulse control disorder."

One of the scientists who is skeptical about the Internet Addiction Disorder study is Professor Michael Farrell, director of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, University of New South Wales, Australia. He said that the research is limited and that it’s possible that "illicit drugs, alcohol or other caffeine-based stimulants might account for the changes."
