Karen Davila Continues Crusade for Kids with Biliary Atresia
It has been eight years since Karen Davila made the award-winning two-part documentary “Yellow Babies” for “The Correspondents.” It featured the plight and fight of a child suffering from Biliary Atresia, a congenital liver disease that hits one out of every 15 children in the country.
Despite the growing number of Biliary Atresia patients, there is still no liver transplant facility in the country. The children have to be taken abroad for a chance of an operation. That is why it has been Karen’s commitment to push for a facility especially for liver patients.
This Thursday (Feb 3) in “Krusada,” Karen will introduce us to the three-year-old Erica, the very first successful liver transplant patient in the Philippines. Based on data from Medical City, the kid started displaying symptoms of Jaundice when she was two months old. After two years, she needed to undergo a transplant operation due as she suffered severe gastrointestinal bleeding.
Stories about kids have always been close to Karen’s heart, not just because she’s a broadcast journalist but because she is a mother herself. But the fight for Biliary Atresia patients is not hers or the children’s alone. Any mother who feels for her children is also part of the crusade.
