Paeng Nepomuceno earns 5th World Bowling Writers award

London-based World Bowling Writers, an international organization of tenpin bowling journalists, PR officials and federation officers, will confer the prestigious 2009 World Bowling Writers Mort Luby Jr. Distinguished Service Award to Rafael “Paeng” Nepomuceno.

The Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Nepomuceno when he competes in the World Tenpin Masters in Barnsley, England on April 17-19, against 15 top bowling athletes from around the world.

Nepomuceno has previously won this event in 1999.

Although Nepomuceno’s bowling career is far from over and he is still a force to be reckoned with in international tournaments worldwide, he is now dedicating his many talents to returning great services to the sport, including coaching conferences, exhibitions and as an ambassador for the United States Bowling Congress.

Nepomuceno’s training is part of the USBC’s effort to create an international coach training program and bolster the strength of federations within bowling’s world governing body, the Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (FIQ). This is in line with USBC’s goal to have bowling included in the Olympics.

World Tenpin Bowling Asssociation (WTBA) President, Kevin Dornberger also congratulated Nepomuceno for earning another international award.

“I offer my sincerest congratulations to Paeng Nepomuceno on being recognized for this prestigious award. Not only has he proven over the years to be a top notch competitor, but he is also a world-class coach. I personally thank him for his contributions to bowling,” said Dornberger.

Recognition by World Bowling Writers came first in 1984 when he was named World Bowler of the Year. This honor was repeated in the following year and again in 1992. Then came the most prestigious award of being elected to the WBW Hall of Fame in 1993, the first to receive that honor.

Nepomuceno has won the Bowling World Cup four times over three decades, in Tehran, Iran in 1976; Jakarta, Indonesia, 1980; Le Mans, France, 1982 and Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1996. He was also runner-up in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1986.

He also has an impressive tally of medals in World Championships, World Games and in Asian zone Championships. He was recently honored for the third time by the Guinness World Records for having won the most career worldwide titles with 118.

His other two Guinness World records are for winning the Bowling World Cup in three different decades and for being the youngest to win a world championship when he won the world cup at age 19.
