Miriam Santiago is 'Worthy of the Fires of Hell' According to Fr. Arevalo

Miriam Santiago may be a force to be reckoned with inside the impeachment courty but according to a priest, she's "worthy of the fires of hell."

Fr. Catalino Arevalo, known as the spiritual adviser of the late President Cory Aquino, said Senator Santiago should issue a public apology for her inappropriate tirades against the House prosecutors during the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

“If you call anybody ‘you fool,’ you are worthy of the fires of hell. And she called them gago, which is Filipino for fool, before millions of people,” Fr. Arevalo said.

With regards to the "hell" comment, the priest at the historic Our Lady of Edsa Shrine said it was Jesus who said that and not him.

Although the priest did not mention the name of the feisty Senator, Fr. Arevalo's clue gave it instantly.

“Well, that was before millions of people. So she is, in conscience, bound to make a formal apology before millions of people if God will forgive her. That’s the teaching of Jesus. You don’t do that, and if you do that, you have to retract it by making a formal apology before millions of people, otherwise you remain worthy of the fires of hell,” he told the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Meanwhile, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago answered Fr. Arevalo's tirade in her recent radio interview by saying that she doesn't need to apologize to anybody.

“They want me to change my personality. Hindi na possible ‘yan because I was born this way eh,” she said.

Miriam Santiago Wins Judge Position in International Criminal Court (ICC)

Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago has been elected judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC), according to the Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

Santiago unanimously won the highly powerful seat in the elections held last Monday, December 12, in New York City. She was reportedly the first to be elected out of 18 candidates vying for six seats on the ICC, garnering 79 nods out of 104 valid votes.

The stint makes Santiago the first woman from an Asian developing state to join as a judge in the Netherlands-based international court that tries persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern.

DFA Secretary Albert del Rosario considers Santiago's election a "day of pride" for the country.

"We are pleased that the international community has listened to us. Indeed, it is a new day for the Philippines, a day of pride for our country and a day of honor, knowing that this is a tremendous responsibility and mandate placed upon our compatriot," he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Santiago shared via an interview that she would resign as senator before she take her oath in March next year.

"I’ll have to resign [as senator]. Isn’t that good news for my enemies? I would have to live in The Hague. I will look like a European and speak like a European and I will be as snooty as a European when I come back," she said.
