Gilas Pilipinas Wins Silver in FIBA Asia Championship 2015
The Philippine National Basketball team failed to clinch its 6th gold in FIBA Asia as it fell short of host country China during the finals on Saturday, October 3, 2015 with a score of 67-78. According to reports, Gilas Pilipinas put up with questionable referee calls and rough play before a boisterous hometown crowd.
This is the 16th time that China won the biennial meet where the winning country will qualify for the Olympic Games.
In 2013, FIBA Asia championship was held here in Manila and China only placed 5th overall. Gilas Pilipinas also placed second that year when Iran won the title.
Team Philippines will have to battle Japan and Iran in future matches for that final slot in the Olympics.
Here is the statement issued by Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda on the stint of the Philippine National Basketball Team in FIBA Asia 2015:
“We join the Filipino people in celebrating Gilas Pilipinas’ silver medal finish in the 2015 FIBA Asia Basketball Championships. Throughout this tournament, our team displayed the Philippine brand of selfless, creative, passionate basketball, fuelled by the warm and vocal support of Filipinos at home and abroad. Our people have shown the world what it means to be Filipino, and this serves as inspiration for all of us to work even harder in our respective endeavors, fulfill our individual potentials, and secure the national pride we have reclaimed, one success after another, in varying fields. “We congratulate our players, our coaches, and supporters, and we encourage all our countrymen to continue their support for our athletes in general, and for Gilas Pilipinas in particular, as they continue to pursue our collective basketball dream of landing a berth in the 2016 Olympics.”
