Gawad Urian Lists the 10 Best Pinoy Films of the Decade

The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino's (MPP) Ten Best Pinoy Films of the Decade Vs. The Film Academy of the Philippines' (FAP) Selections for the Oscar Awards.

In alphabetical order, here is the 10 Best Pinoy Films of the first ten years of the current millenium according to MPP:

1. Babae Sa Breakwater (2003)
2. Batang Westside (2001)
3. Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino (2004)
4. Kinatay (2009)
5. Kubrador (2006)
6. Lola (2009)
7. Magnifico (2003)
8. Ang Pagdadalaga Ni Maximo Oliveros (2005)
9. Serbis (2008)
10. Tuhog (2000)

From the list above, only the indie film "Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros" became the official entry of the Philippines to the Annual Academy Awards or the Oscars. It was also that year (2006) that the Philippines almost had its first Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film because "Maximo" bagged the Best Film nomination from the Independent Spirit Awards. Most films nominated in the annual Spirit Awards, also known as the Oscars for Independent Films, also figure well in the Oscars.

Here is the list of Philippines' official entry to the Oscars from year 2000 to 2009 (CLICK HERE FOR RELATED ARTICLE):

* 2000 Anak (73rd Academy Awards)
* 2001 Gatas: Sa Dibdib ng Kaaway (74th Academy Awards)
* 2002 Mga Munting Tinig (75th Academy Awards)
* 2003 Dekada ’70 (76th Academy Awards)
* 2004 Crying Ladies (77th Academy Awards)
* 2005 No submission
* 2006 Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (79th Academy Awards)
* 2007 Donsol (80th Academy Awards)
* 2008 Ploning (81st Academy Awards)
* 2009: Ded na si Lolo (82nd Academy Awards)

Do you think the Philippines picked the wrong entries to the Oscars from 2000 to 2009 except for 2006?

This year alone, some critics questioned the selection of the Film Academy of the Philippines for "Noy" as our official entry to the 83rd Academy Awards whereas a lot of other local films shown in the year 2010 have won numerous awards abroad.

Is it safe to assume that we are not picking the best pinoy films as the country's official entry to the Oscars?

What do you think?
