Fil-Am animator wins in Berlin Filmfest

The work of US-based Filipino animator and filmmaker Arvin Bautista won one of the major prizes in the recently concluded 59th Berlinale Competition in Berlin Germany.

The work of Bautista was featured in David Lee Miller’s “My Suicide.”

“My Suicide,” won the Crystal Bear, the Grand Prize in the Generation 14Plus or youth section of the top-rated German film festival.

The Hollywood Reporter described Miller’s “My Suicide” as the filmfest’s “critical hit.”

The movie is about a “world-weary teenager” who becomes a celebrity after announcing that he plans to take his own life.

The jury, which consisted of 14- to 18-year-olds, commended the “rare theme.” Jury members said they were “fascinated [not only] by the film’s gripping content, [but also by] the highly original way … it was made.”

In 2004, Maryo J. de los Reyes’ “Magnifico” won the Crystal Bear in Berlinale’s Kinderfilmfest or Children’s section.

Bautista said what he made his work different in this project was because he “juggled various styles” for the animation sequences—from cartoony to anime, from 3D to rotoscoping.”
