Tirador Wins Calgari Film Prize

Brillante “Dante” Mendoza’s “Tirador” (“Slingshot”), bagged the Calgari Film prize, given by an association of theater owners and film distributors in Germany, at the recently concluded Berlinale International Film Festival.

“Tirador,” which competed in the Forum Section, also won a cash prize of 4,000 euros (P238,000), half of which is earmarked for the film’s distribution in Germany.

A three-member jury—Andreas Heidenreich, Dagmar Kamlah, Julia Teichmann—handed the award, according to the website www.berlinale.de.

In a phone interview, Mendoza said CenterStage Production, “Tirador” producer, is currently negotiating with a German distribution outfit.

“Tirador” earlier won the Special Jury Prize at the 7th Marrakech International Film Festival in Morocco, sharing the award with Russian film “Kremen” (“The Hard-Hearted”).

Bloody winners

The Berlin festival wrapped up Sunday after awarding its top prize to a bloody Brazilian drama that some critics accused of glorifying police brutality in the slums of Rio de Janeiro.

“The Elite Squad”, which beat out favorites from Hollywood and Britain to win the Golden Bear for Best Picture, portrays violence and corruption within a crack police team sent to clean up Rio’s crime-infested favelas.

The runner-up film was also controversial: “Standard Operating Procedure,” by Oscar-winning director Errol Morris. It is a probing look at the systematic abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison.
